  • DUCATI 1299 PANIGALES.

I missed the opportunity to test the regular Ducati 1299 Panigale earlier in the year but first impressions of the 1299 Panigale S are very positive. Jumping on, the bike is tall with an easy reach to the ground even for my 180cm height, reach to the bars is aggressive and the pegs are relatively tall. Taking the Panigale S through my usual testing route the first thing that impressed me was just how planted the bike is, even over relatively poor road surfaces the bike just feels like it’s glued to the road, with great feel front and rear. It’s still very firm, but the semiactive mode takes the bite out of the bumps and as a result the real kick experienced in the old 1199 that was so punishing, to your bum, spine and kidneys, is gone. The S is quite agile, with neutral steering that doesn’t exactly require muscling but does require concentration and thought about where you want to go. Changing your line mid-corner is easy and it really does feel like you’re on rails, regardless of your speed. I’d say it’s similar to the 899 Panigale, on which you don’t notice the effort that goes into handling until you jump on something that feels noticeably quicker steering. That’s not a criticism though, just an observation. The Brembo EVO M50 brake calipers on the front are also extremely strong, not in an off-putting fashion but I did find it easier to use the awesome Ducati Quick Shifter with auto-blipper to drop down a gear to wash off some speed. Talking of power the engine is a belter, down low the 1285cc L-twin is lumpy and you can just about roll along at 19km/h in first without clutch but it’s not pleasant, but that does smooth out rapidly as you reach higher into the revs. The fueling and throttle response are both super smooth and responsive, with Sport providing a smoother power delivery and throttle response than Race and power is just explosive. It’s also seriously loud with the two-into-two system with the stock stainless mufflers in the belly and I thought I might pop an eardrum when I rode into our underground garage a bit too vigorously! What did stand out is just how heavy the clutch lever is, it felt like fighting a bear trap when I got caught in really heavy traffic and was having to use it frequently. The DQS on the other hand means that in anything except stop-start traffic you aren’t using the clutch constantly. The Panigale 1299 S certainly has the goods to justify a model suffix, with its full LED lighting, carbon-fibre front guard and auxiliary adjustment buttons adding to the awesome Panigale package. But what really conveys the value of the premium price of $34,990 plus on roads is the full Ohlins suspension, using the Ohlins Smart EC semi-active suspension system for both the NIX30 forks and TTX36 rear shock, as well as an Ohlins steering damper, while further communicating with the Bosch Inertia Platform - which provides cornering ABS and greater traction control refinement. Not only this but the system can actually be run in Fixed mode, which turns off the semiactive suspension and allows full adjustability, just like in a traditional system.
  • SKODA news.

All versions of the Skoda Rapid 1.6-litre TDI hatchback now emit CO2 emissions of 99g/km and are capable of 74.3mpg in optimum conditions on the combined fuel economy cycle. Previously these models emitted 109g/km and 67.3mpg, respectively. All S, SE and SE L editions are affected, with prices remaining the same at Ј17,160 for the Rapid S and rising to Ј18,885 for the SEL.
  • Cops chase new cars.

MERCEDES-Benz, Audi, BMW, Volvo, Subaru and Volkswagen are on Australian police force wish lists as the search begins for a highway patrol car to replace the current fleet of locally produced Holdens and Fords. SUVs are shaping as the likely participants in future highspeed chases as local police look to follow the high-riding road travelled by American cops. The Subaru Forester tS, Mercedes-AMG GLA45, BMW X3 and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT are all being considered following the release of a detailed set of draft “national vehicle specifications” for pursuit cars as replacements for the Commodore SS and Falcon XR6 Turbo/XR8. Each achieves the police target of accelerating to 100km/h in less than 7.5sec while providing space for gear and people. SUVs also provide better ground clearance for hopping median strips or driving on the verges of country roads. And the extra traction of all-wheel drive provides reassurance - and pace - in slippery conditions. Police insiders Wheels spoke to confirmed SUVs were one option being considered. Victoria Police has already purchased some Grand Cherokee SRTs for use in undercover work. BMW produces police versions of its 2 Series Gran Tourer, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3 and X5 for emergency services around the world. “We’re definitely interested in it … we are speaking to the police at the moment,” BMW Australia director of corporate affairs Lenore Fletcher said. “We have many high-powered performance vehicles - including X models - that would be well suited to police work.” MB Australia senior manager of corporate communications David McCarthy said the chances of a GLA45 AMG pursuit car would depend on supply. “If they want the cars, we have to be able to provide the volume,” he said, adding that Mercedes would not produce a specific trim or tune for police. “We’re not going to reduce the spec … that can have implications on used-car prices and the brand image.” Wheels understands police have pressured some manufacturers to take out luxury components to make cars more affordable, but most brands appear reluctant. Police are also asking for modifications - including electronics, pre-drilled holes in the roof and the fitment of full-sized spare tyres - from the factory, something that may not be feasible for many models. Police are also considering high-performance sedans and wagons for highway patrol duties, including the Volvo S60 Polestar, Audi A4/S4, BMW 3 Series and Volkswagen Golf R. While, on the surface, the chances of a Mercedes, BMW, Audi or Volvo police car may seem slim due to their premium price tags, police are keen to consider the whole-of-life cost of all vehicles. Given that depreciation is typically the single biggest cost of any new vehicle, some police jurisdictions are pushing their accounting departments to consider resale values, servicing costs and low fuel use, potentially opening the door to more luxurious alternatives. As part of the draft requirements - which Wheels has seen - police are also probing carmakers as to “the extent that the manufacturer can modify or build vehicles to meet the draft specifications”. Overseas, Mercedes and BMWs are relatively common for police use, and BMW even has a range of ‘Authority’ models designed specifically for emergency services.

  • 2014 McLaren 12C Coupe
The McLaren MP4-12C is suitable for those who like to drive without any limitations on the speed. With its styling and other features, it stands a fair chance against its competitors of becoming successful in the automobile industry. This year at the Geneva auto expo show, another car of this category is being launched, which is the 2015 650S, which will give it a good competition. Its structure and certain features are similar to that of 12C. But in totality it is a faster and funkier version of 12C with a better styling and better twin turbo engine. Its price has not been announced officially, but it is estimated to be ten percent higher than the 12C version approximately. The spider coupe is for $268,250, whereas, McLaren 12C is for $241,900. • 2015 Audi A3 1.8T / 2.0T
The A3's power and electric steering is precise, direct and nicely weighted, especially when at high speeds, although not possessed of much feel, regardless of model. Not surprisingly, the difference when it comes to grip is remarkable, we had suspected that difference would be even bigger and greater when shod with summer rubber with the wheel fitment of 18-inch and lower-profile 40-series tires. Steering feedback improves slightly. All the thanks to the solidly built MQB structure, other sound-deadening measures, and sound insulation such that not even the roughest road surfaces intrude upon cabin serenity while, impacts are nicely absorbed. The only place where unwelcome noise is wind rush, that can creeps in above 70 mph. It is Surprising that at speeds of 24 mpg in city and 33 mpg on highway it will become heavier and powerful for 2.0T's fuel economy in city. it is one mpg far better as compared to the 1.8's, which achieves 23/33 mpg city/highway is another reason to move up to the more powerful 2.0T Quattro. Till we strap our arrangement to it and get a bit more seat time we'll reserve final judgment on them but our impression of Audi's new toy nominally placed it at the head of the tiny table of being the charismatic car. However let us just say it is good and better class in itself as it should be. ...see full review
